Sonora, Ca — The average national price for a tank of unleaded gas has fallen below $2 for the first time since March 9, 2005, and gas stations in the Mother Lode are joining in the fun.
According to AAA, gas prices peaked on June 8th, 2008 when California drivers were paying on average $4.60.
The national average price fell nearly a dime in the past week and almost 90 cents in the past month, according to the Associated Press. The average price for unleaded is now below $2 in 30 states.
The Federal Highway Administration reported this week that Americans drove 10.7 billion fewer miles in September than a year ago, the 11th straight monthly decline.
The lowest gas prices nationwide today are being reported in Independence, Mo, where one station is offering regular unleaded for $1.37.
Gas has fallen to $1.99 per gallon at stations in downtown Sonora.
