San Andreas, CA — The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors has voted to eliminate eight positions in the Building Department due to unrealized anticipated revenue.
?Right now the building permit activity is about half of what it was four years ago,? says Interim Community Development Director John Taylor. ?We really have a greater number of staff than we absolutely need to conduct business.?
The cuts will save the county approximately $750,000 for the fiscal year. The proposal had called for the positions to be eliminated on December 20, but the Board decided to push the layoff date to mid-January. According to CAO Bob Lawton unrealized revenue will amount to approximately $375,000 this year. The layoffs include four building inspectors, a Senior Code Enforcement Officer, two Permit Technicians and a half-time Accounting Technician.
An additional cost saving measure was voted down by the Board, calling for the merger of the Building and Planning Departments with the County´s Environmental Management Agency.
