Calaveras County Budget Outlook

San Andreas, CA — Today kicks off preliminary budget hearings in Calaveras County and officials are saying there is no good news.

The hearings begin at 9 a.m. at the Cal Works Human Services Building in San Andreas.

County Administrative Officer Tom Mitchell says the budget was a challenge due to a dwindling Cash and Carry and a declining construction industry.

The proposed budget of $95 million is balanced with a .9 percent contingency.

To help conserve, Mitchell is recommending a hiring freeze on all vacant General Fund positions.

During the hearings the board will make decisions on a number of issues still left to consider.

Final Budget Hearings are tentatively set for September.
