West Point, CA — A local wood-chipping project invigorating the West Point economy has been awarded a $96,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Calaveras Healthy Impact Product Solutions, also known as CHIPS, is trying to improve the unemployment rate in the area while reducing excess forest fuels.
The project turns small diameter wood into wood chips and mulch.
Congressman Dan Lungren and USDA representatives were in West Point earlier this month to award the grant.
The money will be used to fund job training, purchase equipment, and help create a business to sell the wood products.
