Sonora, CA — Officials say more than 100 birds found dead in a Sonora parking lot may have been intentionally poisoned.
Roughly 110 black starlings and a few red-wing black birds were reportedly found dead in the parking lot of the Crossroads Shopping Center over two days.
A short distance away authorities discovered a pile of grain that had been coated with a green substance resembling strychnine.
Officials say the substance is routinely used to exterminate rodents and requires a permit to purchase. Officials say they plan to talk to several county residents who hold those permits.
Most of the dead birds have been destroyed and the grain was removed from the location.
Anyone who may have information in the case is encouraged to contact the Sonora Police Department.
