Sacramento, CA — Officials report California added 24,300 payroll jobs in December.
The number of unemployed people looking for work declined by 130,000 compared to December 2004. Figures were released today by the state Employment Development Department.
More than 14.9 million people in the state held payroll jobs during the month. The figure doesn´t include farm workers and the self-employed.
The state revised its November payroll figure, adding 12,100 jobs to its initial total of 20,400, bringing the tally for the month to 32,500.
Nationally, some 108,000 payroll jobs were added last month, about half of what economists had been expecting after the big pickup of 305-thousand payroll jobs in November.
The construction sector continued to be the leading source of new payroll employment in December, adding 66-hundred jobs. The leisure and hospitality sector posted the largest decline in jobs, shedding 600 positions.
