Sonora, CA — Functional illiteracy is a challenge for millions of Americans and Reading Plus Coordinator Lynn McCormick says the Mother Lode is not an exception.
Studies say that one out of every six adults is functionally illiterate, which means they may be able to read signs and understand basic instructions, but anything more complex is often beyond them.
McCormick says to combat the problem, Reading Plus uses one on one tutoring to develop reading skills for adults who need them.
Calaveras County Adult Tutoring Program Manager Diane Kriletich also offers a similar program and she says they are always in need of tutors for the volunteer based program.
Fore more information on the issue of illiteracy, tune into Mother Lode Views this weekend for the full interview.
