Calaveras County, CA — The Orvis family ranch off Highway 4 west of Copperopolis was recently protected from any future development.
Bruce and Roma Orvis entered into an agreement with the Trust for Public Land. The family handed over the right to develop their property in exchange for a reported $2.7 million, according to the Stockton Record. Agriculture will continue on the land.
Since 1873, cattle have been raised on the land, which borders Highway 4 in both Calaveras and Stanislaus counties.
Funding for the project came from the state Department of Conservation Farmland Conservancy Program, the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program, and a grant through the Great Valley Center.
