Motion is Lotion: Protecting Your Joints as the Crisp Air Arrives

If your knees or hips ache a little more on a brisk October morning, it isn’t in your head. Drops in barometric pressure and cooler temperatures can cause the tissues in our joints to expand slightly and joint fluid to thicken, leading to morning stiffness.

While the instinct is to stay bundled up inside and avoid movement to “save” your joints, that approach is actually counterproductive. Joints do not have a direct blood supply. They receive their nutrients from synovial fluid, a thick liquid that lubricates the joint capsule. The only way to pump that nutrient-dense fluid into the cartilage and flush out inflammatory waste is through physical movement. In the medical world, this is known as the “motion is lotion” principle.
