Sonora, CA– What started as a defensive battle quickly turned into a dominant Wildcat victory as the Sonora Wildcats beat Rio Hondo Prep 35-10 and secured a second consecutive state championship.
The Wildcats traveled to Saddleback College to face Rio Hondo Prep Saturday morning as two undefeated teams took to the field looking for state championship gold. In what started as a close first-quarter defensive match-up with Sonora held to one touchdown and Rio Hondo Prep a field goal, it quickly turned into a dominant Wildcat performance for the remainder of the game. Sonora not allowing Rio Hondo to score any further points until the fourth quarter, when the game was essentially over, as the Wildcats were able to take advantage of several turnovers and continued to drive the ball into the end zone.
Not only did the Wildcats win the state championship, but doing so with an undefeated season gives the Wildcats an overall 22-game winning streak. A full game recap and photos of the matchup will be posted on mymotherlode.com
