Sonora, CA — The Sonora City Council will meet this evening and vote to close Highway 49 (Washington Street) and several side streets for a big celebration parade this Thursday at 6 pm.
It will feature the Division 2A champion Sonora High football team, the cheerleaders, and the Golden Regiment Band.
The council will vote on it during today’s 5 pm meeting at City Hall.
We reported earlier that both the Sonora High Wildcats and Calaveras Red Hawks football teams are state champions. Sonora defeated Rio Hondo 35-10 down at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo on Saturday to win the 2A state title. Meanwhile, Calaveras beat Bishop Union on Saturday at Fullerton High School 42-21 to claim the Division 5A title.
The council is also planning to send a special note of recognition to Bob Gill of Caltrans, who has worked to expedite the permit process to make the event happen in a short timeframe.
