Speeders and other roadway miscreants will have to spend less time in traffic school to pay for their offenses if a bill approved today by the state Assembly becomes law.
The measure by Assemblyman John Benoit of Palm Desert would reduce the minimum instruction time for adult violators from 400 to 240 minutes. Drivers under 18 would have to spend at least 360 minutes in the classroom instead of 600.
Benoit and other supporters say the change would help the
schools compete with online traffic offender programs that are allowed by some courts and take much less time to complete than the classroom instruction.
Opponents complain that the bill would provide less of a deterrent for traffic violators. The measure now moves to the state Senate.
