Sacramento, CA — An August 23rd federal trial is set for a father and son from Lodi accused of lying to investigators about a terrorist training camp.
But the date seems sure to slip as the government invokes national security protections. Hamid Hayat and his father, Umer, are being held without bond on charges of lying to the F-B-I about the younger man´s attending a terrorism camp in Pakistan last year.
They want a jury trial quickly, as required by law. But prosecutors say national security concerns and the scope of the investigation make an August trial unrealistic.
The federal judge set an August hearing on those objections. But his rulings leave the burden on the government to prove why the two men should not be tried quickly.
