Housing Costs Discussed at Conference

Median prices for housing in towns like Sonora are skyrocketing, say the experts, but some local groups are working to find ways to solve that problem.

An afternoon conference yesterday featured leaders from both Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties, along with experts on the subject.

Among the speakers was Dianne Spaulding, the executive director of the Nonprofit Housing Association of Northern California.

“The message is we´re falling further and further behind in people who can afford to purchase the American Dream, and hopefully we can start to address this problem,” said George Segarini with the Housing Affordability Task Force.

Segarini added that while the news is not good, the discussion was a step in the right direction.

“The Housing Affordability Task Force has been working on this problem and part of our mission statement is to educate the elected officials plus the general public in this regard,” Segarini said.

Also, Jim Sayer, president of the Sierra Business Council spoke Monday, as did Ty Wivell from Central California Bank.

Yesterday´s conference was held at the Best Western Sonora Oaks.
