Sonora, CA — Citing the increasing fire danger, there are new restrictions in place at New Melones Reservoir.
The Bureau of Reclamation reports that there is a “temporary ban on the use of charcoal and other ash-producing fuels in New Melones recreation areas” until further notice.
The BOR reports that “Cooking fires using charcoal briquettes and wood campfires create embers that can easily be blown into dry vegetation, igniting wildfires.” Reclamation requires visitors to use propane-fueled stoves at New Melones recreation areas.
Park rangers have posted signs to notify visitors at the entrance to the recreation areas.
