California To Implement New ‘Zone Zero’ Landscaping Rules

Sonora, CA—California’s board of forestry and fire protection this week unanimously approved new landscaping standards, following nearly 6 years of discussion that will affect millions of homeowners in fire-prone areas.

Defensible space restrictions are nothing new in California and have existed for decades to safeguard homes from wildfire risk. The new “Zone Zero” rule bans plants and most flammable items within five feet of houses, which CAL FIRE says is the area where residences are most vulnerable to ember ignition. However, tree removal is not required, but branches should be trimmed back to at least 10 feet from the chimney and 5 feet above the roof. Additionally, no wooden outbuildings are allowed in “Zone Zero,” and wooden fences cannot be attached to a house.

These rules go into effect immediately for new homes, but existing properties in high-hazard zones will have up to five years to comply with the new regulations. Click here for more details on the new rules.
