A regional water board is blocking plans to poison a stream south of Lake Tahoe to aid what wildlife officials call “the rarest trout in America.”
The decision by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board is stalling the effort for the second straight year.
Without the board´s permission, the project can´t proceed as planned this weekend to poison 11 miles of Silver King Creek.
Wildlife managers want to kill off nonnative fish and reintroduce Paiute cutthroat trout.
The trout evolved into a separate species about five-thousand years ago.
The California Department of Fish and Game hasn´t decided its next step.
It´s too late to proceed this year because the poison must be applied when it is relatively warm.
