Environmentalists and the timber industry are squaring off over a U.S. Forest Service proposal. It´s to salvage 90 million board feet of timber from the lands burned by last summer´s massive Biscuit Fire in Oregon. The Forest Service says its goals are to salvage valuable timber, reduce the chance of catastrophic fires in the future in the Siskiyou National Forest. The preliminary plans call for logging almost three times as much lumber from the area as called for in the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan. Both environmentalists and timber industry advocates are finding things to dislike in that proposal. Public comments on the Biscuit Fire Recovery Plan will be accepted through April 21st.
