Slower winds and cooler weather are helping firefighters in the battle against a 700 acre wildfire near the Oregon border. Officials say the blaze in rural Siskiyou County is 25 percent contained and could be fully surrounded by Friday. The blaze broke out Sunday when a backyard debris fire burned out of control. The few homes in the area were not immediately threatened and no evacuations were ordered.
In Southern California, a fast-moving brush fire broke out late yesterday afternoon near Mission Viejo. The blaze burned 132 acres and was fully contained about two and a-half hours after it started. No injuries were reported. Other fires that have scorched nearly 45-thousand acres of brush and forest land over the past week throughout the state are either contained or are nearing containment.
