The Ukranian immigrant accused of killing six members of his family is in custody this morning after evading
capture for 10 days.
Nikolay Soltys was arrested while hiding under a desk in the back yard of his mother´s home in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus
Heights.
He was barefoot, dirty and disheveled when he was captured at about 8 a.m..
Local and federal investigators fielded about 900
reported sightings from across the nation since Soltys dropped out of sight after the slayings on August 20th. A 70-thousand dollar reward was posted for his
arrest.
The 27-year-old Soltys was the subject of a nationwide manhunt. He was on the F-B-I´s 10 Most Wanted list.
Soltys left behind notes
in an abandoned car. The notes led police to the body of his 3-year-old son and offered an explanation for the killings of his pregnant wife, aunt, uncle and two
young
cousins.
He suggested all were killed because they or other relatives spoke outside the family about things Soltys considered
private.
More than a dozen Soltys relatives, including the dead children´s siblings, have been under police protection since the
slayings.
Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas says authorities never had any confirmed sightings of Soltys outside the Sacramento area. He says
officers thought they had him at another residence last night — but it wasn´t him.
