Homes Destroyed By Sand Fire

Amador County, CA — A large fire visible from areas of Calaveras County has now destroyed five homes and 11 outbuildings.

The Sand Fire is situated near the border of Amador County and El Dorado County, and it is 1,300 acres and 20% contained. It is putting up heavy smoke the region.

CAL Fire reports today that there are 250 homes still threatened, and evacuation advisories are in effect for Sand Ridge Road, Fresh Water, Burlwood, Morales Ranch Road, Vintage Trail, Upton Road and Twin Rivers Road.

The fire is just off Highway 49, about five miles north of Plymouth. It started late yesterday afternoon.

672 firefighters are now assigned to the incident, including several from the Tuolumne-Calaveras region. One minor injury has been reported, and the cause is still under investigation.
