Supermajority Stopped

Sacramento, CA – A major victory has been scored by California Republicans in Tuesday’s election.  The final numbers are in for one of the too close to call races and it has blocked Democratic from retaining their supermajority in both houses of the Legislature.

Yesterday, the GOP successfully flipped an Assembly seat in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area.  Republican Catharine Baker beat Democrat Tim Sbranti in Assembly District 16.  That continues the GOP’s Election Day success, which already stopped a Democratic supermajority in the 40-member state Senate.  Having a supermajority is considered significant, because it would theoretically allow for the passage of tax increases without any Republican support.

However, Democrats did pick up a win in San Diego with incumbent Scott Peters nearly 4,500-vote victory over Republican Carl DeMaio.
