Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County will no longer offer a program that was designed to help teenagers get involved in the civic process.
The Board of Supervisors voted this morning to officially end the Youth Commission. It was created in 2010 at the urging of former Supervisor Liz Bass. The youth group would meet, discuss county issues, and provide input to the Supervisors. After four years of existence, there became a lack of interest, and several recent meetings lacked a quorum.
District Five Supervisor Karl Rodefer said, “I concur that we need to take this action, but sadly. I think there is a good value in having youth involved in local government.”
Rodefer asked that staff work with the schools to see if there is some other avenue that could be beneficial to both the county and the students.
It was noted that another option for youth in the community to gain civic knowledge, and help the community, is the Youth Leadership Tuolumne County program, offered by the Chamber of Commerce.
