Update: HWY 108 Crash With Entrapment

Update 12:25 p.m.: One person had to be rescued from a solo vehicle crash on Highway 108, between Long Barn and Cold Springs, near Bald Mountain Heliport Road in Tuolumne county.

Originally, a helicopter with a hoist had been ordered due to the vehicle going off the highway and plunging 400 feet down an embankment that is snow-covered and in rocky terrain. But it was called off after the injuries changed from major to minor. The male driver was trapped inside the vehicle and a jaws-of-life-like tool was used to free him. A tow crew is on the scene working to haul the vehicle back onto the roadway, which could take several hours. The highway is not blocked and traffic is moving freely. Tuolumne County Fire Department just this month received four new combi-tools, as earlier reported here.

Update at 11:20 a.m.: The CHP has now changed the injuries from major to minor and has called off the helicopter with a hoist. Further details on the crash are below.
