State Making Changes To Jessica’s Law

Sacramento, CA —  California decided in 2006 to ban all sex offenders from living within 2,000 ft. of schools and parks.

The California Department of Corrections announced this week that it will soften “Jessica’s Law.” Those offenders whose victims were under 14 will still be outlawed from living 2,000 ft. from a school, but decisions will be made on a case by case basis, regarding offenders whose crimes were against older victims.

Former state Senator George Runner helped introduce Jessica’s law, and says he’s disappointed by the CDCR’s move. “The residency restrictions in Jessica’s Law help keep our neighborhoods and children safe and provide important piece of mind for California families.”

Jessica’s law was named after Jessica Lunsford, who was abducted in 2005 in Florida.
