Yosemite National Park, CA — With an incoming storm due Thursday that may well bring significant snowfall to the higher elevations, Yosemite National Park officials have made the decision to close Highway 120 Tioga Pass at Crane Flat for the season.
The announcement follows Caltrans closures in November of Highway 108 Sonora Pass at Snow Park and Highway 4 Ebbetts Pass at the Mount Reba turnoff for the season. Each of these passes typically re-opens in the spring as weather conditions permit. Some years the openings come close to or on Memorial Day weekend. As previously reported, last year, due to extremely mild winter conditions, the passes opened weeks ahead of that.
While Tioga Road is now closed for the season, Yosemite National Park remains open year-round with snow removal operations active on all other roads within the park. These roads are subject to chain control or temporary closures when driving conditions are deemed too hazardous. Motorists should bear in mind that while driving in the park during the winter months all vehicles, even those with four-wheel drive, are required to carry tire chains.
