Helping Homeless Pets Beat The Heat

Sonora, CA – As this heat wave continues to blanket the Mother Lode, Tuolumne County Animal Control (TCAC) is making sure the homeless population has the essentials they need for their furry four-legged friends.

“Our team has been visiting Camp Justice to ensure that all animals have what they need and water for all. Our shelter is open for a cooling center for small animals, and we encourage anyone to call us if they need assistance. We’re here to help,” advised shelter officials.

TCAC warns that animals are very vulnerable during heatwaves, especially flat-face breeds and seniors. They add that heat stroke is very deadly and difficult to treat in pets. Another heat caution offering: “Officers have been extremely busy with hot animal calls, including pets in vehicles. Remember, leaving animals in vehicles or in deadly heat situations is illegal.”

Pet owners are urged to always have fresh, cool water available, and shade available for all animals. Shelter officials also recommend, “Kiddie pools and misters work great as well. We highly recommend bringing pets indoors, especially elderly pets.”

The shelter, located at 10040 Victoria Way off Highway 108/49 in Jamestown, is providing a cooling center for pets free of charge. They ask that those taking advantage of this offer call their office (209-694-2730) if bringing a pet and staff will be happy to care for them during this heat wave.
