Update: Acreage Climbs On Pedro Fire

Update at 3:35 p.m.: The Pedro Fire burning in grass and brush near the Mariposa and Tuolumne County lines in the Granite Springs area has grown from 2,727 to 3,647 acres and remains at 7% containment. According to CAL Fire, the flames continue to move at “a moderate to dangerous rate of spread.” They add, “Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the state are flying fire suppression missions as conditions allow.”

Update at 12:55 p.m.: CAL Fire updates that the Pedro Fire that ignited in Granite Springs in Mariposa County yesterday remains at 2,727 acres and 7% containment. All earlier announced evacuation orders and warnings remain in place. Additionally, the American Red Cross Central Valley Chapter has reopened the evacuation shelter at New Life Christian Fellowship (5089 Cole Rd., Mariposa) for evacuees affected by the blaze in Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties. Mariposa County Health & Human Services has opened a temporary evacuation point at McCay Hall, 2820 CA-140, Catheys Valley, to serve as a staging area and information hub as evacuees determine their immediate needs, including sheltering. Tuolumne County Animal Control has also opened its shelter in Jamestown ( 10040 Victoria Way, off HWY 108) for Tuolumne County residents impacted by the fire to bring their pets for safekeeping. So far, shelter officials have noted that the need for large animals has not been needed, however, a facility is on standby. They added, “Evacuation teams Evacuation of Livestock in Tuolumne Emergencies: Team ELITE and ACES ‘Animal Care Emergency Services’ have been activated.”

Original story posted at 6 am: Mariposa County, CA — Progress is being made battling the Pedro Fire near Lake Don Pedro. as it is 2,727 acres, and there is five percent containment.

The CAL Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit reports, “Thick vegetation and winds have been challenging for firefighters, but they are making progress on the main fire. Firefighters will continue to prioritize areas of the fire with the greatest threat and will work to gain containment.”

There are 500 structures and powerlines threatened. PG&E is reporting about 75 customers in the area of the blaze are still without power. CAL Fire reports there is limited access for crews due to the difficult terrain. There are evacuation orders for the Hunters Valley area, Arbolada Road and Piney Creek Road and evacuation warnings for Barrett’s Cove Boat Launch Area, the north side of Hwy. 132 from Merced Falls Road to Jones Road and the south side of Hwy. 132 from Jones Road to Horseshoe Bend, including the Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area. Resources on scene include 300 personnel, including 22 engines, 4 hand crews, 3 water tenders, 6 dozers, and 5 helicopters.
