Wildcats Trounce Calaveras

Written by: Zeb Drivdahl

The Sonora Wildcats defeated the Calaveras Redhawks 64-7 Friday night to advance in the CIF Sac Joaquin Division 6 playoffs.

Sonora received the opening kickoff with excellent field position near midfield. After a Calaveras offsides penalty gifted the Wildcats a free 5 yards, Cash Byington took the first play of the game 54 yards to the house on a brilliant run off the right side. The Redhawks had a successful first drive of their own, moving the ball methodically down the field to the Sonora 20-yard line before Byington picked off a pass in the endzone to end the threat. The Wildcats went right back to work on offense, finishing off another touchdown drive with a 43-yard keeper from quarterback Eli Ingalls. A successful 2-point conversion put the score at 15-0. The Wildcat defense shut down the next Calaveras drive, forcing a turnover on downs deep in Redhawks territory. The very next play, Ingalls connected with Wyatt Holt on a play-action pass for a 36-yard touchdown, and the rout was on. Brody Speer would close out the 1st quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run of his own, giving Sonora a 28-0 lead.

The rest of the game continued the Wildcat dominance. Ingalls notched two more touchdowns in the second quarter to push his total to three on the night. Byington and Steven Morfoot also found the endzone before halftime, with Morfoot snagging an interception on defense as well. With the score 50-0 at the half, the entire second half progressed on a running clock. Morfoot notched another touchdown in the 4th quarter, and sophomore Wesley Butler closed out the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run.

Calaveras finishes the season at 9-3 with a share of the Mother Lode League title. The Wildcats improve to 10-2 and travel next week to Woodland Christian for their semifinal matchup against the Cardinals.

Steven Morfoot won Chicken Ranch Casino Player of the Game honors for his 2 TD, 1 interception performance, and stellar play on defense. Tanner Navarro delivered the Faust Heating and Air Hot Hit of the Game on a brutal hit delivered to a Calaveras receiver early in the second quarter.

The Sonora Wildcats games air live on KVML 1450AM/102.7 FM, with Nick Stuart and Zeb Drivdahl. The Summerville Bears can be heard on 93.5 KKBN with Mike Woicicki and Mike Rodgers as your hosts for all the action.
