Update: Second Fire In Calaveras County Stopped

Update at 5:35 p.m.: CAL Fire spokesperson Emily Kilgore updates that mapping of the Brauns Fire shows its size is 47.4 acres after its forward spread was stopped in about an hour. Crews have gained 25 percent containment as they continue to work towards full containment. What sparked the blaze is under investigation.

Update at 2:55 p.m.: CAL Fire spokesperson Emily Kilgore updates that the forward spread of the Brauns Fire has been stopped at an estimated 50 acres. A small ground crew will remain on scene, working towards full containment and then mopping up for the next several hours. What sparked the blaze is under investigation.

Original post at 2:20 p.m.: Valley Springs, CA — Air and ground resources are battling a second fire in Calaveras County today.

Dubbed the Brauns Fire by CAL Fire, it broke out around 2 p.m. and is burning in the 3000 block of Highway 12 and Briski Road, near Central Hill Road, east of Toyon Middle School and between Valley Springs and San Andreas. CAL Fire spokesperson Emily Kilgore reports the fire is estimated at 50 acres, but currently, no structures are threatened.

The CHP reports closing Highway 12 at the Highway 49 junction.  Motorists are asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
