Sonora, CA– The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is ramping up enforcement efforts to ensure safety on the roads during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. From 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, officers statewide will participate in the agency’s annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). During the campaign, CHP officers will patrol California highways, emphasizing safe driving behaviors, seat belt use, and sobriety.
“Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness, and our mission is to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “We encourage everyone to prepare their vehicles, leave early to account for heavy traffic, buckle up, and never drive impaired. The well-being and safety of others start with making good decisions behind the wheel.”
The 2023 Thanksgiving MEP saw 1,047 arrests for driving under the influence and 27 fatal crashes under CHP jurisdiction. Five of the 17 vehicle occupants killed in those crashes were not wearing seat belts, underscoring the importance of proper safety measures. The CHP urges motorists to buckle up, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and stay sober to help make the holiday travel season safe for all.
