Sonora, CA — As fire danger continues to increase in the Mother Lode, the Bureau of Land Management is tightening restrictions on its federal lands in areas like Tuolumne, Calaveras, Mariposa and Amador counties.
Effective July 13, campfires, barbeques and open fires will be outlawed, even if you are in a developed campground space. However, exceptions are portable stoves with gas, jelled petroleum, and pressurized liquid fuel, if you have a valid California campfire permit. The BLM oversees land like the Red Hills Recreation Management Area south of Chinese Camp.
In addition, no shooting is allowed on BLM property, including the use of firearms for hunting. Also, no smoking is allowed unless you are in an enclosed vehicle or building. Moreover, motorized vehicles must stay on established roads or trails.
Fire season in California is in full effect due to the low relative humidity and high temperatures. The BLM notes that 90-percent of wildfires in the US are human caused.
