Looking at the latest budget, it would appear that the City of Sonora is back in the black.
Sonora Mayor Bill Canning was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Canning said, “Yes, you can say that we are in the black. We have a budget surplus, but the surplus has a lot to do with the cost cutting measures that were put in place over the last year and a half.”
“I can see a light at the end of the tunnel” said Canning. “But I’m cautious and I just hope the light isn’t a freight train.”
Canning continued, “The revenues are off. Sales tax is off. A year ago we froze all of the positions. We haven’t hired anyone. It’s been painful.”
“For the future, we have to hope that local businesses get healthy. This would increase the amount of sales tax coming in. It would allow the City to properly function. Although some businesses are doing well, most businesses are still hurting and still struggling in this economy.”
“I’m not real optimistic. I know it’s looking better but it still hurts out there. At any time the economy could bump its toe and we would all be back in the same place.
“But yes, it does sound good to say that the City of Sonora does have a budget surplus.”
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
