Sacramento, CA – The Associated Press reports California Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation that would create the nation’s first state-run retirement savings program for private-sector workers. Brown approved he bill over the objection of critics who argue it’s a new liability for taxpayers.
The bill would create the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program. It would service more than 6 million low-income, private-sector workers whose employers do not offer retirement plans.
The Governor says no to a bill that would ban all indoor smoking and restrict outdoor smoking at nursing homes and similar facilities.
Governor Brown says “Allowing an elderly resident, who can’t go home and who has smoked for a lifetime, to smoke in a designated indoor area during inclement weather sounds reasonable to me.” He adds, “Let’s rely on the locals, in this case the facility and its residents and employees, to figure out which accommodations work or don’t.”
