Sonora, CA — Ground has now been broken for the installation of a new lighting system at Sonora High’s Dunlavy Field.
According to Principal Todd Dearden the first hole was partially drilled this week. Different equipment will be needed to complete the 16 foot dig. One other hole will be drilled on that same side of the field and then two holes will be drilled for the final two light standards behind the bleacher section. No longer will poles block spectators’ view of the field.
Canepa and Sons Well Drilling has donated both time and equipment to complete the drilling. The remainder of the work will take place next week during spring break.
Dearden adds that the lights have been shipped and are currently in transit to Sonora.
Head Football Coach Bryan Craig has commented that the current lighting is so poor that coaches can’t even see the players in the end zones when reviewing film.
The installation of the lights is scheduled to be completed this summer in time for the start of the 2010 football season in September.
Dearden commented that the $250,000 for the lights has been raised. Now it’s incumbent upon raising an additional $300,000 for the new track. The current surface is being tracked onto and continues to damage the football/soccer artificial turf.
