Free Bonsai Tuneup Demo at Club Meeting

Methods of preparing bonsai trees for the coming year will be the focus of Dan “Doc” Ward’s free public demonstration immediately following the Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s Saturday, March 7 meeting at 9:30 a.m. Location is the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. Ward describes his technique as “a kind of tree tuneup that promotes healthy growth and future plant structure.”
Ward is a longtime resident of Granite Bay whose interest in this hobby started over three decades ago. He has lectured at Sierra College (horticultural department) in Rocklin, taught Master Gardeners’ classes for several years, and currently leads weekly instructional groups on a variety of bonsai topics.
“Tuneups consist of repotting, trimming to reinforce the desired style, preparing the potting soil, and root pruning,” he said. “Next, we will cover compression, which keeps the tree structure within a chosen design pattern. And finally, defoliation to develop the desired ramification (branching) of tree growth. These are steps that can start in December and continue through the spring.”
Ward noted that he makes the effort to tuneup his trees yearly “to develop new sedimentary roots and condition his bonsai for more intense growth.” He will provide handouts of his steps at the presentation. In addition, Ward will show how to create a root-over-rock bonsai, which will be offered as a raffle prize.
