Club sensei (instructor) and senior mentor, Dave Anderson will host a special “Vines to Trees” presentation at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, November 1 at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. The club’s monthly meeting will start at 10 a.m., followed by the training session for members. The public is invited to attend and observe Anderson’s techniques of wiring and shaping honeysuckle vines to transform them into stylized bonsai trees.
Plants with 3/4 inch diameter trunks in one gallon containers will be provided at no cost as a benefit to current paid club members. Repotting will be up to individuals at a future date. Following Anderson’s demonstration, he will be available for advice and assistance.
Dave Anderson has been raising bonsai trees for over 60 years. What started as a hobby for him in the sixth grade in Solano County, blossomed into attending multiple classes in this living art form and ultimately, becoming a lifelong passion. “Raising bonsai is simply a way of growing plants, shrubs or woody trees in a pot,” he said. “There is no one special variety to use. You can grow maples, pines, fruit trees, liquid ambars, alders, and any California natives.”
A raffle for bonsai materials will also be held and members will have trees available for purchase. For more information on the Mother Lode Bonsai Club, contact Bev Meyerhoff at (916) 934-6916 or bevmeyerhoff@gmail.com. The club’s email is motherlodebonsaiclub @gmail.com. Everyone is invited to attend meetings, demonstrations and workshops regardless of their levels of experience in bonsai.
