The U.S. Department of War was originally established in 1789 to manage the Army and Navy until the Navy department was created in 1798. The War Department was abolished and replaced with the National Military Establishment following WW2 in 1947 and renamed the Department of Defense in 1949. We are not sure why now, when America is not actually involved in a shooting war nor expecting one the Trump administration renamed it the Department of War. It just seems unnecessarily bellicose to us given that the entire world knows that we are the remaining global superpower.
