On Saturday, January 17th at 1 pm in the Buena Vista Cemetery, local Life Scout, Joshua Schuler will lead a flag raising ceremony. The Buena Vista Cemetery is located at 186 Cemetery Lane in Murphys. The ceremony will take place at the newly installed flag pole on the crest of the hill near the columbarium. Plan to arrive a few minutes early.
Joshua Schuler, of Troop 343 in Murphys, oversaw installation of a flagpole at the cemetery. In fall of 2025, he presented his proposal to the Cemetery’s Board of Trustees and then raised funds and donations from local organizations and businesses to bring his project to completion. Over the next few months he oversaw the project, working to install a 20ft tapered aluminum flag pole with a solar light, managing the time line and project budget. The flag pole is now in place at the Buena Vista Cemetery.

The Buena Vista Cemetery has served the community since the early days of the Gold Rush, with the earliest known burial taking place in June 1855.
