Man Caught After Stealing U-Haul Truck

An 18-year-old male from Copperopolis is in custody, after stealing a U-Haul truck late Wednesday night.
Calaveras County Sheriff´s Deputies say they saw the truck leave the U-Haul Center in Copperopolis around 11:30pm Wednesday night. The truck´s driver evaded officers, and then abandoned the truck with the engine running behind McCarty´s store.
18-year-old Ernest William West Junior was found hiding in an abandoned building near the Old Copper Mine, and admitted he´d stolen the truck with help from another suspect. CHP officers then responded to the scene, and West was charged with offenses related to stealing the U-Haul truck and obstruction of justice.
West is at the Calaveras County Jail. Bail is set at $40,000 dollars.
