Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s Saturday, March 7 meeting will feature Sam Adina, a highly respected area bonsai expert. The club’s monthly meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas with Adina’s demonstration on repotting immediately following.
Adina, who is also the sensei (teacher) for the Modesto Bonsai Club, has been raising and teaching bonsai design for over 25 years. He is recognized as one of the best local bonsai instructors and has conducted presentations for the Golden State Bonsai Federation, California Shohin Society and numerous bonsai venues in the Philippines.
Over time, potted plants will tend to send out new roots until they cease to function efficiently or strangle themselves. Dead roots will decay and consequently kill the tree. The frequency of repotting depends on the type, size and age of each species, generally every 3 to 5 years. “Being close to the end of the dormant season, now is the best time to repot,” said Bev Meyerhoff, club president. “In the demo, Sam will also show his special tie-down techniques to efficiently support the tree.”
Everyone is invited to attend meetings, demonstrations and workshops regardless of their levels of experience in bonsai. The organization’s members come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as the San Joaquin Valley. For more info, contact Bev Meyerhoff at (916) 934-6916 or bevmeyerhoff@gmail.com. The club email is motherlodebonsaiclub@gmai.com.
