Family Leave Program To Begin July 1

Sponsored by:

The first statewide paid family leave program in the nation goes into effect on Thursday.

But according to a new study, only a small number of California workers are aware

of it.

The paid leave program was signed into law in 2002 by former Governor Gray Davis.

An estimated 13 million workers are eligible for up to six weeks of partially paid leave to bond with a new child or take care of a seriously ill family member.

But according to the study released today by the California Family Leave Research Project, only 22 percent of adults surveyed even knew about the law.

Both business and family leave advocacy groups say the focus now will be on how spread the word about the law.
