More SUVs on California Roads
You´re right — you have been seeing more S-U-V´s on the road.
According to new census figures, California leads the nation in registration of sport-utility vehicles, with nearly 2.8 million of the gas guzzlers in 2002.
That´s nearly a 39 percent increase since 1997, when fewer than 2 million were registered.
Nationwide, sales of S-U-Vs jumped 56 percent between 1997 and 2002.
Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon says that adds up to about 24.2 million S-U-V´s, or one S-U-V for every eight licensed drivers.
Following California were Texas, New York and Florida.
Registration grew fastest in Tennessee, Georgia and Indiana.
