Moderate Quake Could Breach Delta Levees
A University of California expert is warning that even a moderate earthquake could breach levees in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta — disrupting the flow of Northern California water to Southern California.
But other experts say there´s no imminent crisis.
The debate at a water conference comes as experts try to plot the Delta´s future — and the future of CalFed, the California Federal Bay-Delta Program.
It follows a levee collapse west of Stockton in June that tipped the state´s fragile water balance.
And it comes days after experts warned the Delta could be endangered as well by rising sea levels from global warming as the arctic ice cap melts.
