Judge Gives CDF Logging Authority

Logging on 11,000-acres near Calaveras Big Trees State Park has been approved by the California Department of Forestry. That´s because a Calaveras County judge rules that the CDF is the primary authority governing timber cuts. The decision undermines environmentalists´ hopes of sidestepping an agency they say is too lenient on logging companies.
The judge rejected a lawsuit by two Sierra Nevada environmental groups that say CDF isn´t properly considering the cumulative effect of clear-cutting by Sierra Pacific Industries, the state´s largest private landowner.
