More Study on Clear-Cutting Wanted

Environmental groups that have opposed clear-cutting of forests for years are taking a new tack.
They´re arguing that the practice hurts California´s urban water supplies, 60 percent of which flows from the Sierra Nevada. They say too little is known about clear-cutting´s long-term effects to let it continue without intense study. They´re petitioning the state Board of Forestry for a moratorium in the meantime.
It´s part of a dual strategy also aimed at convincing regional water quality control boards to impose more logging restrictions.
Timber industry representatives aren´t immediately responding to the petition.
