Environmentalists Suit Stops Logging Plans Near Trinity

Officials at Six Rivers National Forest have decided not to log burnt timber after a lawsuit was filed by environmentalists.
Contractors could have begun logging this week.
Six Rivers´ stated aim was to make fuel breaks so firefighters can make a stand away from populated areas against fires coming out of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. But the Sierra Club and the Environmental Protection Information
Center asked a Federal District Court in San Francisco to block the logging.
Environmentalists claim the project is a ruse for a timber sale and would damage a productive steelhead trout creek and exacerbate the risk of fire.
The timber was killed in the 1999 Megram Fire, which burned about 50-thousand acres of Six Rivers.
