Senior Expo 2012: The third annual Senior Expo will be held Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora from 9AM to 2PM. This year’s theme is Explore, Learn, Connect. The Expo will feature over 50 participants representing businesses, agencies and organizations from across the region providing information about: Finance, Insurance, Legal, Caregiver Options, and social organizations. The stage will have entertainment all day with the 2012 Senior Idol contest being the main event. Food will be available for purchase. For transportation call 532-0404.
New for 2012 – the Lions Eyemobile will be there from 8AM to 11AM for eye exams and hearing aid checks.
The focus of the event is to provide information and services to Seniors, Baby Boomers, Caregivers and Families. This event is both fun and informative – come and see for yourself. Visit our website at www.seniorfair.com for additional information.
Tuolumne County Senior Volunteer of the Year Awards: It’s time to recognize them. Contact Cathie Peacock for a nomination application by calling 586-4802 or you may write her at: Box 594 Mi Wuk, CA 95346. Nominees must be 60 years or older; reside in Tuolumne County; not be a member of the Tuolumne County Commission on Aging. Awards presentation will be (DATE CHANGE) July 12, 2012 at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, Fourth Floor, 2 So. Green St., Sonora 11AM-12PM.
“Legal Matters”
Here are a few bills to keep your eye on this year:
- SB 1047 – Establishes a missing person advisory called “Silver Alert” to protect persons suffering from dementia-related conditions and who as a result, might wander away from home.
- AB 2141 – Requires that a two-year punishment enhancement be added for identity theft from a victim aged 65 years or older.
- AB 2374 – Prohibits a consumer credit card reporting agency from charging a person who is 65 years old or older a fee placing a security freeze on his/her credit report.
And remember, Senate Concurrent Resolution 32 (SCR 32) recognizing the contributions of California’s senior volunteers was passed in 2011. The Resolution proclaims the month of May as “Senior Volunteer Month” in California. Senior Senators worked hard in making the recognition of senior volunteerism during the month of May a permanent celebratory event.
Jots & Thoughts
2012 Mother Lode Roundup: On Saturday May 12, several members of the Tuolumne County Commission on Aging participated in the Annual Roundup Parade to publicize the Senior Expo, and enjoyed it immensely. The VW convertible was driven by Bill Dorffi and Jim Grinnell rode as passenger. They chauffeured the parade’s honorary marshal, Joseph Perez. Malcolm Carden and Larry Bramblett carried the Expo banner, and walking along in front of the vehicles were Kathi Bramblett, Rich Markus and Carleton Penwell. “Outrider” Roberta Goodwin drove her power scooter with her sign saying “EXPO OR BUST”! Our Senior Idols, Martha Patterson 2010 and Shirley Brasesco 2011, were next, riding in a beautiful red Lexus, courtesy of Lexus of Modesto. A good time was had by all!
Elderly Hitching: Commissioner and Director at Interfaith, Cathie Peacock, has noticed and is concerned because she has observed more and more seniors hitching a ride along county roads. Comment and weigh in if you have noted this.
The Old Mill Run: Also from Cathie, 26% of the runners who pre-registered were seniors 60 yrs and older. The event was held on April 26th. Run ON!
