Clevenger, David
David A. Clevenger, 76, of Sonora, died Thursday, July 8, 2021, from complications following a brief illness. Dave was born in Youngstown, Ohio, but was a longtime resident of Sonora. He attended Wellington High School in Ohio and later studied at George Washington University, and Cuesta College. Dave was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1962-1965. He operated a trucking business prior to working for the State of California as a Water and Sewage Plant Supervisor at various facilities, finally retiring from the Cal Fire Baseline Fire Camp.
Dave volunteered as the former Executive Director of Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Community Service Unit for 14 years. He held the Fellowship Degree of Honor in the Loyal Order of Moose and was an active member of the Mother Lode Gun Club. He also enjoyed many hobbies and pastimes, including country-western dance instructor; DJ/entertainer for special events; western/cowboy reenactments; stained glass design, and jewelry making. He was an avid reader, and a true Star Trek “Trekkie.” He was also known for providing food for mass quantities of hummingbirds and enjoyed watching all their antics.
Dave not only had a servant’s heart but was a man of action and many talents. He was a leader and volunteer among his friends. He was literally a “Mr. Fixit,” a renaissance man of sorts and was always ready and willing to jump into action to lend a helping hand when needed.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Florence Clevenger; his in-laws Phil and Lois Rainey; brother-in-law Don (Mandy) Rainey; and sister-in-law Kim (Doug) Rainey Goss.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Patty Rainey Clevenger, along with his children, daughter Tammy (Eric) Hayden of Paso Robles, CA and son Chris (Margaret) Clevenger; one grandchild and one great-grandchild of Sanford, FL; stepsons Kevin (Stacy) Siville and three grandchildren, and Steven (Rachael) Siville and two grandchildren of Sonora, CA; brother William (Sara) Clevenger, Tulsa, OK; sister Linda Benton, Magma UT; sisters and brothers-in-law Susan (Les) Lighthall, Modesto, CA, David (Marylouise) Rainey, Tracy, CA and Elizabeth Rainey, Venice, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, located at 20921 Longeway Road, Sonora. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sonora Area Foundation in Dave’s honor.
