Agencies Update Butte Fire Relief Efforts

Calaveras County, CA — Whether it is clearing debris or loan assistance, those impacted by the Butte Fire are asking for help and getting it from an unlikely source.

Do not let the name fool you, the Small Business Administration (SBA) serves more than just what the name implies – It also secures loans for homeowner, renters and non-profits that have suffered loss due to a natural disaster. SBA spokesperson Yolanda Stokes says, “We have issued over 700 applications…597 to homeowners and renters another 174 to businesses impacted by the Butte Fire.” Those applying for the low interest loans do not need to have insurance or if they have insurance do not need to have reached a settlement on damages. One thing they do need however according to Stokes is a reachable phone number. She notes, “They will have to meet with our loss verifier to assess the damage and come up with a dollar amount…So, typically in our loans we see a processing time of two to three weeks.” Already five loans have been approved for $448,000. Stokes expects those numbers to grow daily and significantly as more people apply.

Additionally, help removing hazardous debris from the devastating flames is available from the State’s Office of Emergency Services through CalRecycle. Its crews began working on the burn scar Monday with more than 500 Right-of-entry agreements signed by property owners in Calaveras County. Their working involves conducting extensive tests, removing hazardous trees near damaged structures, and taking measures to control erosion in the burn areas, according to CalRecycle officials.
